1. $1.1M GOOGLE.ORG-BACKED PROGRAMME TARGETS 30,000 STUDENTS ACROSS FOUR COUNTRIES, STARTING WITH TEN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
The Africa AI Upskilling Programme (AAUP), which launched on 10 August at the University of Lagos, had its Nigeria-specific funding and targets confirmed this week: a $1.1 million commitment from Google.org, delivered through the FATE Foundation and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), to train lecturers and teaching assistants to deliver an AI curriculum - combining Google DeepMind's course content with University College London's teaching methods - to STEM students at ten Nigerian universities. Nigeria's slice of the programme targets 11,836 students, 50 "AI champions" and 50 teaching assistants, part of a wider push across Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Ghana to train over 292 lecturers and reach 30,000 students in total. FATE Foundation's Executive Director said the goal is to "deepen AI knowledge, strengthen institutional capacity, and equip educators with practical skills for lasting impact," while Google.org's Sub-Saharan Africa programme manager said "technology should be a great equalizer, not a wedge that deepens global inequality." Nigeria's 3MTT programme director urged participants to apply AI to solving domestic challenges and growing the country's AI workforce.
Why this matters for AI academies: This is about as directly actionable as a WAAA opportunity gets: a named, funded programme building an AI curriculum out of Google DeepMind course content and UCL teaching methods, aimed specifically at training lecturers and teaching assistants rather than only students, currently rolling out at ten Nigerian universities as part of a four-country push. Academies in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa or Ghana should establish now whether their institution is, or could become, one of the target universities; academies elsewhere should treat the DeepMind-plus-UCL curriculum design as a benchmark worth requesting details on.

2. EGYPT AND THE UK LAUNCH A JOINT AI CENTRE TO DIGITISE AND PRESERVE ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE
On 17 August, Egypt's National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) and the UK's University of York launched the British-Egyptian Center for Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Heritage Technologies (BECAIVE), a joint research facility applying AI and 3D modelling to archaeology and heritage preservation. Headquartered at NRIAG in Egypt and at York's Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Heritage in the UK, the centre's stated goals are to build digital repositories and databases of archaeological sites and artefacts, develop 3D modelling and virtual-reconstruction technology, build regional capacity in heritage preservation, and foster cooperation with universities, museums and research institutions. Two flagship projects are already under way: "Virtual Hawara," a digital documentation project for the Hawara Pyramid, and "Seshat," an AI digital assistant for heritage researchers. NRIAG President Bassem Nabawy and centre director Abbas Mohamed Abbas led the launch.
Why this matters for AI academies: BECAIVE is a concrete example of what a narrowly scoped, specialist AI research centre looks like in practice - built around two flagship projects (a digital pyramid-documentation effort and an AI research assistant) rather than a broad AI faculty - and is worth studying by any WAAA academy weighing a similarly focused partnership model in its own specialist field, whether heritage, agriculture or another local strength.

3. META AND NIGERIA'S GOVERNMENT LAUNCH AI ACADEMY, OFFERING CASH FUNDING TO WINNING STARTUPS
On 17 August, Meta partnered with Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN) to launch AI Academy Nigeria, a training initiative for developers, entrepreneurs, students and early-career professionals. The programme runs three tracks: an AI-skills track offering free courses via Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp; a six-week developer bootcamp covering generative AI with Llama, prompt engineering, multimodal applications and data analytics; and a startup pitchathon, with applications closing 21 August. Ten shortlisted startups will pitch at GITEX Nigeria on 3 September, where two winners will each receive $5,000 in cash funding plus $2,000 in advertising credits, and the programme's top 100 overall performers will receive scholarships toward Meta Blueprint certification, up to $5,000 in advertising credits, and an all-expenses-paid trip to Meta's AI Summit in Istanbul. Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani, Meta's head of public policy for Anglophone West Africa Sade Dada, and RAIN founder Olushola Ayoola all spoke at the launch.
Why this matters for AI academies: The programme's three-stage structure - free open courseware, then a structured six-week bootcamp, then a funded pitch competition - is a ready-made curriculum design WAAA academies can study or adapt directly, and the free Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp tier costs nothing to point students toward today. Academies with strong computer-science or entrepreneurship faculties should also watch the 21 August application window and the GITEX Nigeria pitchathon on 3 September as a live case study in how a bootcamp-to-funding pipeline actually performs.

4. ZAMBIA OPENS AI COOPERATION TALKS WITH CHINA - BUT INSISTS ON OPEN-SOURCE TOOLS AND "NO ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL"
On 17 August, Zambian and Chinese officials opened talks on expanded AI cooperation covering digital infrastructure, skills development, locally tailored applications, computing capacity and inclusive governance. China's ambassador Han Jing set out four proposals: 5G and energy-efficient computing-hub infrastructure support, smart-village applications, talent development through joint laboratories and training bases (drawing on China's wider pledge of 5,000 AI training slots for developing countries), and governance coordination that respects data sovereignty. Zambian officials set clear conditions of their own. SMART Zambia National Coordinator Percy Chinyama said Zambia must "understand where it is, decide where it wants to go" rather than adopt models built for mature economies, and stressed the need to "safeguard regulatory sovereignty and ethical alignment" so that cooperation "supports Zambia's sovereignty rather than impose a one-size-fits-all approach." Permanent Secretary Dr Brilliant Habeenzu added that Zambia should not approach AI development "as though it were starting from zero," insisting cooperation build on existing national capability. Priority sectors named were agriculture, mining, manufacturing, health and education, with limited computing infrastructure, data quality and a lack of interoperable standards flagged as the main barriers.
Why this matters for AI academies: Talent development through joint laboratories and training bases is one of China's four named proposals to Zambia, part of a wider pledge of 5,000 AI training slots for developing countries - WAAA academies in Zambia, or watching how Zambia negotiates access and terms, should track what specific slots and lab-partnership terms emerge from these talks as a possible model for their own government-to-government negotiations.
